High
school football 2010 kicks off this
week!
Football season kicks off this week and
the LSN is the place to be to hear or
watch many of the top teams in the state
in Week 0 and all season long!
This week, Legacy Sports Network
premieres its expanded presence in
statewide sports and eleven state-ranked
teams in the Dave Campbell’s Texas
Football preseason polls can be heard on
the LSN, including three huge
opening-week match-ups between Top 10
teams.
The second season of FabEnCo The 1560 Game of
the Week presented by First Community
Credit Union kicks off on 1560 the Game
in Houston on Friday with a battle
between the Class 5A No. 3 Katy Tigers
and the Class 5A No. 9 North Shore
Mustangs.
Katy came close two winning a
third-consecutive state title in 2009,
losing to Abilene in the Class 5A
Division 2 championship game. With
Donovann Young and Brooks Haack leading
the offense and Colt Atwood and Grant
Clifton leading the defense, they appear
poised to make another run at a state
championship.
North Shore did not win a district title for
the first time in years in 2009, losing
at Durley Stadium in Beaumont in Week 10
of the 2009 season to West Brook. The
Mustangs then made an uncharacteristic
early exit from the playoffs, losing in
the area round to Brazoswood.
But North Shore returns seven starters
on each side of the ball in 2010 and,
led by Miketavius Jones, Derrick Mathews
and junior Paul Lewis, the defense
should be especially good this year.
The key to Friday’s game may come down
to North Shore’s ability to move the
ball on offense against a very
disciplined Katy Tiger defense.
Saturday’s matchup between the Class 5A
No. 5 Allen and No. 7 Cedar Hill
highlights our new partnership with the
great folks at Champion Sports Radio.
Allen is just two years removed from
winning the 5A Division 1 state
championship in 2008 and many observers
believe that the only question to be
answered on offense for the Eagles is
who will take the snaps to get the
football to a trio of talented running
backs and highly-regarded receiver
Jonathan Lee. Saturday’s game will go a
long way toward answering that question.
Meanwhile, Cedar Hill went into the 2009
season as one of the favorites to make
the state championship game and went
through the season undefeated before
falling to the eventual Division 2 state
champ Abilene in the regional semifinal
round.
The Longhorns return some key players on
offense and will look to complete some
unfinished business.
The icing on the Week 0 cake may be the
game that all of central Texas is
buzzing about, as Westlake and Lake
Travis faceoff in an LSN-TV presentation
on Saturday night.
Westlake is ranked No. 4 in the DCTF
Class 5A poll and Lake Travis is
everyone’s No. 1 in Class 4A. Westlake
lost a heartbreaker to Euless Trinity in
the 5A Division 1 championship last year
while the Cavaliers won their third
straight state championship in Class 4A.
Lake Travis hasn’t lost a game of any
kind since the second game of the 2007
season, a 46-game span. The last team to
beat them? The Westlake Chaparrals beat
them, 28-21, in that second game of
2007.
From that point, behind junior QB
Garrett Gilbert, the Cavs reeled off 14
wins in a row to win the 4A D-2
championship. Then, behind Gilbert in
2008 and junior QB Michael Brewer in
2009, Lake Travis posted back-to-back
16-0 seasons.
Brewer is back for his senior season
and, until someone knocks them off, the
Cavs are the heavy favorites to repeat
for the fourth consecutive year.
Saturday’s game in Austin should provide
an electric, playoff-style atmosphere.
The 5A No. 6 team, the Stony Point
Tigers, who barely missed playing for
the 5A D-1 championship last year, will
call the LSN home for all their
broadcasts this year. Stony Point lost
to Euless Trinity, 35-28, in the state
semifinal last December and DCTF
Magazine predicts that the Tigers will
defeat Katy this December for their
first state championship.
LSN’s coverage of Stony Point football
begins Thursday night as the Tigers host
Los Tigres de Universidad de Nuevo Leon
from Monterrey, Mexico.
The La Porte Bulldogs and Deer Park Deer
also join the LSN family for the 2010
season, as we become the broadcast home
for everyone of their games this season.
La Porte hosts Fort Bend Clements and
Deer Park hosts the Dickinson Gators
this week.
In the Houston area, Oak Ridge and St.
Thomas return to the LSN for the 2010
season. St. Thomas plays their
traditional opener against Strake Jesuit
this week, while Oak Ridge hosts
Magnolia West.
The Golden Triangle will be
well-represented on the LSN this year,
too, as the Golden Triangle Friday Night
Experience comes to Legacy. The
Nederland Bulldogs and the Port
Neches-Groves Indians will have their
games broadcast each week on the
network.
DCTF Magazine
lists PN-G as one of their Class 4A dark
horses, stating “(PN-G) didn’t earn
preseason rankings. But you (and their
district opponents) would be foolish to
ignore them.”
The Indians open their 2010 season in
San Antonio in the Dave Campbell
Football Classic against
Gregory-Portland. The game will be one
the week’s LSN-TV presentations.
Nederland will be trying to rebound from
a 5-6 season in 2009. Their 2010 season,
though, will not get off to an easy
start. The Bulldogs host Class 3A No. 9
West Orange-Stark in their opener on
Friday. The game will also be broadcast
in the Golden Triangle area on 560-AM
KLVI.
It may be impossible to top Week 0 from
week to week, but LSN, along with
partner groups KMAC Sports and Champion
Sports Radio, will provide plenty of
opportunities for fans from all across
the state to follow the very best in
high school football through the regular
season and playoffs all the way to the
state championships in Arlington.
From the start, we’ve said we’re
building a legacy one game at a time.
Now we’re bringing you more games to
build that legacy just a little quicker.
