BRANCH ON DEKANEY/STEELE –
“To culminate the 2011 season you have two programs,
still in their relative infancy, playing for the Class
5A Division 2 trophy. In just their sixth season at the
varsity level the Steele Knights already have one state
title to their credit. It came last year when the
Knights beat Denton Guyer, 24-21. The Dekaney Wildcats
are in the fourth varsity season and this 2011
postseason run is their first in school history. The
Wildcats are led, as everyone knows, by SR RB Trey
Williams. Williams is committed to Texas A&M and has
been one of the most prolific running backs in the rich
history of Texas high school football. He has run for
over 7,800 yards in his career. In this postseason
Williams has carried the ball for 1,213 yards and 16
touchdowns. Dekaney head coach Willie Amendola
will not hesitate to pound Williams any chance he can
get. Last week Williams torched the Timberview Wolves
with 227 yards rushing and 6 of the teams 8 scores.
Williams will get his touches but can the supporting
cast contribute enough to help claim a championship? QB
D’Juan Hines has been a little limited, because
of the success of Williams, throwing the football in the
playoffs. He comes into this game 13/23 for 167 yards
with 4 TD’s and 2 INT’s. He might need to make some big
plays with his arm on Saturday. He threw for two scores
last week in a 56-19 smashing of Timberview where both
of this throws were hauled in by WR Austin Garrett.
For head coach Michael Jinks and the Steele
Knights they come in to this game with the one thing
that Dekaney doesn’t have and that’s playoff experience
at the big stage. That means a lot. QB Tommy
Armstrong, committed to Nebraska, has the
opportunity to do what only Midland Lee’s Jon Rogers has
done and that’s win back-to-back state titles in the 5A
classification. Keep in mind that while the Knights won
the championship last year at 14-2, they come in to
Saturday’s game unbeaten at 15-0. As the Knights must
pay attention to Trey Williams, the Wildcats have to
account for Armstrong both on the ground and through the
air. This season he has thrown for 1,844 yards, 27 TD’s,
0 INT’s, while also rushing for 1,224 yards and 16 TD’s.
Look out for RB Justin Stockton who is just a
sophomore but has been huge replacing Malcom Brown. The
key for both teams will be forcing the other guys to
beat them and not kids like Williams and Armstrong.
Whoever does the better job doing that will take home
the hardware Saturday night.”
McLAIN ON HIGHTOWER/SOUTHLAKE CARROLL –
“The
Southlake Carroll Dragons will go for their 8th state
championship in school history Saturday as they take on
the Hightower Hurricanes for the class 5A Division I
championship at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, kickoff is
scheduled for 4pm. Carroll (15-0) is the district 7-5A
champions and are the champions out of region 1, while
Hightower (13-2) is the district 23 champions and the
champs of region 3. Hightower reaches the championship
game after a 54-35 win over San Antonio Madison last
week, while Carroll had to score twice in the final
minutes to defeat Dallas Skyline 28-24. The Hurricanes
feature senior quarterback Bralon Addison who has
thrown for over two thousand yards and 22 touchdowns
this season with only three interceptions, while rushing
for another 1,524 yards and 18 touchdowns. Running back
Joshua Wilhite has picked up almost 1,400 yards
and has 15 touchdowns to his credit. The Carroll Dragons
are led by their junior quarterback Kenny Hill
who scored three touchdowns in the state semifinal win
last week against Skyline, including the game winner
with 46 seconds remaining. He has piled up 1,267 yards
rushing on the season with 22 touchdowns, while passing
for another 2,777 yards and 23 scores. Wide receivers
Sabian Holmes and Peyton Williams are both
one thousand yard receivers on the season.”
JONES ON MANVEL/ALEDO –
“The biggest stage in the world will play host to the
biggest game in High School sports. On December 17th
at 12:00 p.m. the undefeated 15-0 Manvel Mavericks will
battle the 13-2 Aledo Bearcats at Cowboy Stadium in
Arlington. The winner will be awarded the 4A Division II
State Championship. Each team comes into this game with
very explosive players, but none more explosive than the
Aledo SR RB Johnathan Gray. Gray, who has
committed to play at the University of Texas, has put up
astronomical numbers for this season, as well as for his
career. This season the Bearcat RB has rushed for 3650
yards, and has 69 touchdowns. This Saturday he will have
a chance to break several national records including;
most touchdowns in a season (69, needs 3 to break), most
touchdowns in a career (204, needs 1 to break), and most
points for a career (1226, needs 21 to break). Gray is
also is ranked 4th all time in the nation
with 10,653 career rushing yards. But Coach Tim
Buchanan’s Bearcats are also is bringing several
other weapons to Jerry’s World. Bearcat’s SR QB
Matthew Bishop has thrown for 2800 yards at a 65%
clip to go along with 24 TD passes, and just 5
interceptions. With the contributions of Bishop and
Gray, the Bearcat offense is averaging an astonishing 57
points per game, including an 83 point night against
Springtown earlier this season. Last week they nearly
put up 70 points in a 68-28 blowout victory against
Corsicana. With that being said they will be facing a
defense that has been stingy all season. Coach Martin, who
was this year’s Greater Houston Touchdown Club's Coach
of the year, is bringing a
very confident defense to Arlington, only allowing 12
points per game. The Manvel Maverick defense is led by
their SR DE Taiwan Johnson who will be entering
the State Championship with 11 sacks, including 3 big
sacks last Saturday in their State Semi Final win vs CC
Calallen. 27 of Johnson’s 70 tackles have
occurred behind the line of scrimmage. Coach Martin’s
Mavericks are also bringing a very prolific offense to
Cowboy Stadium. The Manvel offense is averaging 46
points per game, and is full of players that can make
big plays at any time. JR QB Shane McCarley this
season has thrown for over 1600 yards and 21 TD passes.
None bigger though than the one last week at the Alamodome
to Kaylon Melancon in the waning moments of the 4th
quarter that tied things up. It was the second time in
back to back weeks that Melancon and McCarley had hooked
up for big late 4th quarter touchdowns. Josh
Martinez added the knock-out blow to Calallen on a
25 yard game winning field goal with no time on the
clock. The 31-28 win would propel the Manvel Mavericks
into the State Championship game for the first time in
their young school’s history. 2 big teams, 1 big
stadium, and just 1 state title.”
